Pegasus Bay takes a minimalintervention approach to its wines. The Rieslings are made with the German Spätlese style in mind, and this entices with a medium-dry palate of delightful, peachy fruit and aromas of waxy lime, grapefruit and baked peach sweetness. Mouthwateringly fresh. 18.5pts/20 (95/100pts)

Casa Valduga, Gran Reserva 130 Brut, Bento Gonçalves, Brazil NV

A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir made in the Champagne method, this has good persistence and mouthfeel, with complex, intense green apple fruit and rich, creamy characters. it’s a very inviting, refreshing and easy-drinking fizz. 16pts/20 (86/100pts)

Waterstone, Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California, USA 2011

Waterstone uses selective sourcing of grapes from Napa Valley growers to make its wines. This has a fruit-driven nose of lemon curd, touches of cantaloupe melon and rich butterscotch. It’s tangy and fresh, leading to creamier notes, yet retaining real vitality. 18pts/20 (93/100pts)

Concha y Toro, Corte Ignacio Riesling, Casablanca Valley, Chile 2011

This Riesling is made by the winemaker Ignacio Recabarren, who picked the grapes early, resulting in a fresh, very juicy and moreish wine. Mellow stone-fruit sweetness is balanced by lime-juice acidity and there’s a touch of waxy lanolin and savoury pastry on the nose. 17.5pts/20 (91/100pts)

Sainsbury’s, Taste the Difference Bottle-Aged Semillon, Hunter Valley, Australia 2006

It’s not often the opportunity arises to taste an aged Semillon for less than £10. Semillon is an underrated variety and some of the best come from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales. Here, an oily texture and nutty tones complement the floral notes on the long finish. Super. 17.5pts/20 (91/100pts)

Clos Lapeyre, Jurançon Sec, France 2012

The Larrieu family winemaker, Jean-Bernard, is keen that his organic methods express the Jurançon terroir and, in this instance, the Gros Manseng grape. Mouthwatering acidity; juicy, tart grapefruit notes and a long finish all equal a great food wine of real character. 17pts/20 (90/100pts)

Constantia Glen, Two, Constantia, South Africa 2012

From South Africa’s oldest wineproducing region comes this beautiful blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. Finely judged oak bolsters the ripe melon and citrus notes with a hint of white pepper. On the palate this wine is massive yet elegant, with freshness throughout and roundness from the wood. It finishes with a long green apple finish. 18.5pts/20 (95/100pts)

Puklavec & Friends, Sauvignon Blanc, Stajerska, Slovenia 2012

Since 2009 the Puklavec family has been making wine with the area’s growers’ co-operative. It uses modern technology coupled with hand-picking. Aromas of gooseberry, guava and star fruit lead to a palate showing further tropical fruit with a saline, mineral edge. Refined. 17pts/20 (90/100pts)

Steenberg Vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, Constantia, South Africa 2011

Steenberg might have a spa, golf course and top restaurant but wine remains at its heart, and this one has a lovely grapefruit nose and hints of the sea. Big in body yet with amazing freshness, it shows length and breadth with the saltiness continuing to the palate, and a limey finish. 17pts/20 (90/100pts)

Virgile Joly pour L’Etranger, Bois du Blanc et Tais Tois, Vin de France NV

Made by three friends who blend this wine after the organic Grenache Blanc grapes are vinified by Joly. Full of ripe, spiced apple, slatey minerality and a refreshing saline streak to balance the weighty, creamy palate. Great fun. 17pts/20 (90/100pts)

Pietro Beconcini, Antiche Vie, Chianti, Italy 2011

From grapes planted in the 1950s when the founder of this family producer bought the land he worked on from the owners of the estate. Here, intervention is kept to a low, and all wines are made with wild yeasts. Unpretentious, juicy, with vibrant fresh red fruit, it’s the perfect weekday wine with plenty of spark. 17pts/20 (90/100pts)

Recchia, Poderi del Roccolo, Bardolino, Italy 2012

In the hills to the east of Lake Garda, Recchia now owns vineyards in both Valpolicella and Lake Garda, making its Bardolino from the latter. Refreshing, with plenty of lively, crisp red fruit, the palate has floral touches, while there are aromas of bright strawberries and summer berries to lure you in. 16.5pts/20 (88/100pts)

Ca’d’Gal, Lumine, Moscato d’Asti, Piedmont, Italy 2012

Sandro Boido cultivates his 6.5ha organically and as naturally as possible. Extended lees contact gives this moreish, lightly sparkling dessert wine lovely body with richness of lychee, white peach and lime blossom notes, enlivened by great freshness. 17.25pts/20 (90+/100pts)

From one of the region’s stars comes this classic example of Südtirol Pinot Grigio – far from the anodyne examples that mar the reputation of this grape. Fresh pear and apple crumble aromas lead to a textured and weighty palate of smoky pear fruit, floral notes and sweet spice. 16.75pts/20 (89/100pts)

Giacomo Fenocchio, Dolcetto d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy 2011

Founded in 1864, this estate is known mainly for its Barolos, but don’t miss out on this charmer. First, heady perfume of roses and violets, then the palate shows juicy red cherry fruit and a dusting of dried herbs bolstered by tight tannins and fresh acidity. 17pts/20 (90/100pts)

for five generations, Lunae Bosoni has crafted a wine that delivers on
