Bouchard Père et Fils, Clos des Chênes Decanter average score: 17.25pts/20 (90+/100pts) Individual judge’s scores: Michael Schuster 17.5 Steven Spurrier 16.5 Sebastian Thomas 17.5 Appealing, fine, fresh strawberry and red cherry nose with earthy red fruits and a mineral edge. Fine concentration, density; expressive palate. Sweet and harmonious, this is aromatic, long to finish, with fine quality. Still youthfully austere. Domaine Jacques Prieur, Champans Decanter average score: 17.25pts/20 (90+/100pts) Individual judge’s scores: Michael Schuster 17.5 Steven Spurrier 17 Sebastian Thomas 17.5 Lovely, scented strawberry fruit, with ripe black cherry and new wood. Rich fruit on the palate with chewy tannins, but plenty of matter and complexity. Excellent quality, quite exotic and rich for this vintage, with lovely texture and density, this is a strikingly seductive Volnay with a good future. Domaine Jean-Marc Bouley, Les Carelles Decanter average score: 17.25pts/20 (90+/100pts) Individual judge’s scores: Michael Schuster 17.5 Steven Spurrier 16.5 Sebastian Thomas 17.5 Appealing, perfumed nose with attractive summer fruits. Fine, dry tannins, but plenty of premier cru finesse here. Long and gently sweet flavour, real class and complexity, with those elegantly balancing tannins and a fragrant, delicate appeal. Domaine Marquis d’Angerville, Champans Decanter average score: 17.25pts/20 (90+/100pts) Individual judge’s scores: Michael Schuster 17 Steven Spurrier 17 Sebastian Thomas 18 Lovely, scented ripe strawberry and raspberry nose. Spicy richness on the palate, delicious intensity, ripe and chewy with new oak blended in. Complex and seductive, with fine, structured tannins, excellent length and a mineral finish. Ripe fruit very much gripped by new oak tannins, but it’s both fleshy and precise with great vigour, vibrant fruit and acidity that drives the fruit through to a long finish. Will evolve well. Very fine and ripe in the mouth, with concentrated red berry fruits. Integrated, naturally sweet, fine, silky fruit with fine, elegant tannins. Long, ripe and gentle to taste, with classic Volnay finesse and premier cru scope. Elegant with a hint of minerals on the finish. Price £42 McKinley Vintners Drink 2013–2026 Alc 13.5%

 

 

Bouchard Père et Fils, Ancienne Cuvée Carnot, Caillerets Decanter average score: 17pts/20 (90/100pts) Individual judge’s scores: Michael Schuster 16 Steven Spurrier 17.5 Sebastian Thomas 17.5 Attractive, perfumed, ripe nose of summer fruits. Firmly tannic but plenty of ripe fruit to back it up. Good precision and depth, with spicy oak notes and an appealing texture. Fine minerality with good structure and length; should age well. Christophe Vaudoisey, Les Mitans Decanter average score: 17pts/20 (90/100pts) Individual judge’s scores: Michael Schuster 17.5 Steven Spurrier 17.5 Sebastian Thomas 16.5 Gentle, spiced plum nose and youthful black and red fruits. Fine ripeness and vigour on the palate, very good length and elegance of expression with an overall fleshiness and sweetness. A stylish Volnay, fine and complete. Very good future. 12 of 13 Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, En Caillerets Decanter average score: 17pts/20 (90/100pts) Individual judge’s scores: Michael Schuster 17 Steven Spurrier 17 Sebastian Thomas 17 Dense, ripe, red and black fruit and new oak on the nose and lifted fragrance. Brisk and generous, with upfront fruit, which is thick and dark with touches of damson. Forward and supple, long and ripe, this is firm but fruity, but needs time in bottle. Pierre Morey, Santenots Decanter average score: 17pts/20 (90/100pts) Individual judge’s scores: Michael Schuster 16.5 Steven Spurrier 17.5 Sebastian Thomas 17 Black summer fruits, plums and blackcurrants on the perfumed nose. Real premier cru quality. This is a beautifully structured wine that has kept all the aromatic qualities of Volnay with no exaggeration of fruit, just vineyard expression. and clarity.
