MICHEL ROLLAND: CHILE HAS PROGRESS THE LAST 15 YEARS AND ARGENTINES NEW WINE REGIONS LIKE RIO NEGRO AND BUENOS AIRES CAN OBTAIN QUALITY WINES
Michel Rolland in an exclusive interview to AndesWines.com radically changed his vision of Chilean Wines- in fact – now, few days ago confirmed to the Chilean wine site that Chile has progressed very much during the last 15 years and numerous wines, today, show the enormous potential of this country. The history is only beginning and Chile will confirm the leadership in the major producing wine ountries in the world.. He also refers to new wine regions in Argentina since it is an interesting part of his profession. “Rio Negro, due to the latitude and the South of Buenos Aires are new wine areas that need to be explored and where the viticulture is recent. I have always liked to work for new projects. Rio Negro is a land that has possibilities to produce real quality wines
Rolland, during the last thirty years as wine consultant has worked with over 200 wineries in 17 countries and now, he thinks, he would work with another Chilean winery if Casa Lapostolle authorizes him to do it, which is not the occasion now. On the other side of the Andes- Argentina- Rolland started to work with several wine regions like Neuqun, Mendoza and South of Buenos Aires, besides the wines he is consulting for Clos de los Siete Wine Investment Group with French partners.
In Chile, a few days ago, the Argentine wines of Rolland participated in a Tasting for the Circulo del Vino de Andes Wines – Val de Flores (2004), Cuvelier Los Andes (Collection 2005), Grand Vin (2005), Monteviejo 2005, Linda Flor (Petite Fleur), besides Clos Apalta of Casa Lapostolle from Colchagua Valley in Chile. The wines were tasted by journalists, enologists and sommeliers in the Club Union el Golf, reaffirming that the favourite of all the tasted wines was the Chilean wine, another sign that Chile has started to work the upscale wine since the last 15 years.
AndesWines.com asked Rolland about the emblematic vine-stock of Argentina The Malbec- and he said “The Malbec found a special place in Argentina. We could think that in other areas you can get very good wines, but will take a lot of time to discover the best sites and to understand the best conditions for winemaking. Argentina and Cahors’s region in France already have a history with Malbec’s very old vineyards.”
What do you think about the evolution of the Chilean wines lately? Some day we will see Michel Rolland in other wine valleys of Chile advising in the future?
Chile has progressed very much during the last 15 years and numerous wines, today, show the enormous potential of this country. The history is only beginning and Chile will confirm the leadership in the major producing countries in the world.
When I started working for Casa Lapostolle Lapostolle, he granted exclusivity at that time and there are little chances that I would take another consulting in Chile, except if Casa Lapostolle authorizes me to, but it is not the case today.
Can you tell us which other vine-stocks- non traditional- according to you have potential to be developed?
Great part of my work is, certainly, based on traditional vine-stocks. But in Portugal and Brazil, we work with the vine-stocks called Tourriga. This vine-stock shows very interesting characteristics.
In all the countries where I travel, if national vine-stocks exist, I try to see if it is possible to work them and do interesting wines. It will take a lot of time to obtain the adapted vineyard and to understand these vine-stocks in order to get the maximum quality wines.
Any message for new winemakers who are beginning to work and are unmotivated for this complex and competitive industry?
Always there is competition in all the fields. The enologists must do the best possible wines in the regions where they are. Because of it, a lot of work, curiosity and enthusiasm is needed. It is the secret of the success and is what allows to take a fantastic life as I have.

La storia sta cominciando soltanto ora ed il Cile confermer la direzione nei ountries producenti principali del vino nel mondo.”. Inoltre si riferisce alle nuove regioni del vino in Argentina poich una parte interessante della sua professione. “il negro de Rio, dovuto la latitudine ed il sud di Buenos Aires sono nuove zone del vino che devono essere esplorate e dove la viticoltura recente. Ho gradito sempre lavorare per i nuovi progetti. Il negro de Rio una terra che ha possibilit per produrre i vini di qualit reali “Rolland, durante i trenta anni ultimi poich il consulente in materia del vino ha lavorato con oltre 200 cantine in 17 paesi ed ora, lui pensa, lui funzionerebbe con un’altra cantina cilena se il casa Lapostolle lo autorizza a farlo, che ora non l’occasione. Dall’altro lato delle Ande Argentina Rolland ha cominciato funzionare con parecchie regioni del vino come Neuqun, Mendoza e sud di Buenos Aires, oltre ai vini che sta consultandosi per il gruppo di investimento del Clos de los Siete Wine con
i soci francesi. Nel Cile, alcuni giorni fa, i vini dell’Argentina di Rolland hanno partecipato ad un assaggio per “i vini” – Val de Flores (2004), Cuvelier Los le Ande (accumulazione 2005), grande Vin (2005), Monteviejo 2005, Linda Flor (Petite Fleur) del Circulo del Vino il de le Ande, oltre a Clos Apalta del casa Lapostolle dalla valle di Colchagua nel Cile. I vini sono stati avuti un sapore dai giornalisti, enologists ed i sommeliers nel EL del sindacato del randello golf, riaffermando che il favorito di tutti i vini avuti un sapore era il vino cileno, un altro segno che il Cile ha cominciato funzionare il vino del upscale dai 15 anni ultimi. AndesWines.com ha interrogato Rolland riguardo al ceppo di vite emblematic dell’Argentina – il malbec- e lui hanno detto che “il malbec ha trovato un posto speciale in Argentina. Potremmo pensare che in altre zone poteste ottenere i vini molto buoni, ma occorreremo tempo molto scoprire i luoghi migliori e capire i termini migliori per la vinificazione. La regione de Cahors e dell’Argentina in Francia gi ha una storia con le vigne molto vecchie del malbec.” Che cosa pensate ultimamente allo sviluppo dei vini cileni? Un certo giorno vedremo Michel Rolland in altre valli del vino del Cile che raccomandano in avvenire? Il Cile ha progredito molto durante i 15 anni ultimi ed i vini numerosi, oggi, mostrano il potenziale enorme di questo paese. La storia sta cominciando soltanto ed il Cile confermer la direzione nei psi produttori principali nel mondo. Quando ho cominciato lavorare per il casa Lapostolle Lapostolle, ha assegnato l’esclusivit a quel
tempo e ci sono probabilit piccole che prenderei un altro che mi consulto nel Cile, tranne se il casa Lapostolle lo autorizza a, ma non oggi il caso. Potete dirci quale altri ceppi di vite non tradizionali secondo voi hanno potenziale essere diventato? La parte grande del mio lavoro, certamente, basata sui ceppi di vite tradizionali. Ma nel Portogallo e nel Brasile, lavoriamo con i ceppi di vite denominati Tourriga. Questo ceppo di vite mostra le caratteristiche molto interessanti. In tutti i paesi in cui viaggio, se i ceppi di vite nazionali esistono, provo a vedere se possibile funzionarli e fare i vini interessanti. Occorrer tempo molto ottenere la vigna adattata e capire questi ceppi di vite per ottenere i vini di qualit massimi. Tutto il messaggio per i nuovi winemakers chi stanno cominciando a lavorare ed unmotivated per questa industria complessa e competitiva? Sempre ci concorrenza in tutti i campi. Il mosto di enologists fa i vini migliori nelle regioni dove sono. A causa di esso, il lavoro molto, la curiosit e l’entusiasmo necessari. il segreto del successo ed che cosa concede occorrere una vita fantastica come ho.
